I lost my father at his age 57 just 7 years after we first went Pronghorn hunting near Beaver Creek in WY. His words at that time in '93 were that I should do what I wanted in life young as old age might not come. I am glad I took his words and ran with them for no matter what the time passes all too quickly.

Dad himself was part mountain man, part cowboy ... he couldn't decide which at times. His Lakota friends called him "Many Tails" after observing his love of squirrel hunting. Dad had a truck camper for many years, but 100:1 him and ma dragged their tipi all over the USA. Many campgrounds wouldn't take tipi's so he made friends with ranchers all over the west & midwest camping next to their creeks. In many ways their 16' tipi was more comfortable than any RV. His greatest disappointment was having to wear trifocals so he could see both sights and the target all at the same time. Even though I could outshoot all of my teachers in middle-school conservation class, at age 57 dad could still outshoot me 99% of the time. In 1974 after the 2nd oil embargo, how many 13 year-olds got to hand-build a 360 s.f. log cabin with their dad, where the five of us lived in the woods on the family farm? We hand carried water from the spring, chopped wood, and planted a huge garden. It was hard to want to go to school! I thought we were the richest people in the world at the time, we needed so little money at the time (that was before I discovered cars and girls!).

You folks have a safe trip back to SD. It is snowing gently here in the canyon near Ouray, CO this morning, but everything is budded out and the aspens are shifting to bright green!

David & Sheila KnappDavid, Sheila and Stella the Beaglehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05725648660372162054noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5585083146261174706.post-1419094669205466472010-05-24T06:02:36.708-07:002010-05-24T06:02:36.708-07:00I was touched by your tribute to your son, and fee...I was touched by your tribute to your son, and feel enriched by your memories of his life.
