Clear The Barn.....Time for the EOS PARTY!!

Ms. Pat told me to "Clear The Barn",  it's time for our “End Of Season” Party….   So we moved out the Pickup, and the 4 wheelers and set up the chairs…… Ms. Megabyte2 even got to help.

We got the FOOD tables all set up and Ms. Pat had the famous “Gina Special” Taco Soup cooking all day in her crock pot.  Boy, it was smelling good.  We’re gonna have a PARTY!!


At 4 pm sharp, the friends began arriving and bringing food of all types.  Some delicious stuff!!  The chairs were all filled up, except for one. Poor Bonnie has not been feeling well at all and she just couldn’t make it.  Sure hope she gets to feeling better…

After Happy Hour, the food was served.  Here is Bob, Gregg, Larry and yours truly chowing down on Ms. Pats Taco Soup…  It was all “Oh So Good”!


Then it was time for some EOS serious conversation.  Here is LeeAnn, Shirley, Michal, Ms. Pat and Geri discussing something interesting.

JRoger, see your Buffalo Skull hanging up on the wall? I’m wondering how in the world I am ever going to get it transported all the way to Florida to you without breaking it. Don’t worry, we will get it there, even if Ms. Pat has to hold it on her lap!!

I told you I would show you a picture of the painted shed today, so Gregg put the finishing touches on the trim after we got the second coat on the sides…….


Now here is the finished product……..WOW, it looks superb!! Even better than I expected…. Thank You so much Gregg for your BIG part in getting this “project” completed. I couldn’t have done it without you…


The paint matches so well and it looks GREAT.  Ms. Pat and I are so happy and proud of it, along with our new Porch….  Boy, we have completed a lot this summer……..


It looks so nice, I almost hate to leave………….. But time keeps marching on. Next week at this time, we will be preparing to attend the big Buffalo Roundup on Monday the 24TH. After that, we will soon be ready to head South…..


I had so many compliments and comments on Gregg and Bonnie’s FLAG, along with requests as to where one like it can be purchased, I wanted to mention that they purchased it at the Don-Wes Flea market in Donna, TX. We have all googled and searched and searched for a place that sold them and haven’t come up with one yet. We found some with the American Flag on the top half and the Canadian Flag on the bottom, but we all prefer one like theirs. How about it, has anyone out there found a place where this exact type Flag can be ordered? If so, let us know....if worse comes to worse, we can send some of our good friends down at Retama in Mission, TX. over to the Donna Flea Market to pick up a few……

Quilts, Quilts and More Quilts!!

Sunday after Church, Ms. Pat and Bonnie headed to Hill City where there was a big Quilt show. Gregg and I stayed home and just passed the afternoon relaxing and enjoying what we like to do most, nothing!!

For those of you that would like to view all some of the hundreds of Quilts on display all over town in Hill City, just click on this slide show and go to my Web Albums and check them out.  The camera battery died about halfway through so Ms Pat didn't get pictures of all of them but there were some unique and outstanding quilts…….

Ms. Pat has a new project that she has been spending a lot of time working on lately. Here is a picture of the "Quilt Top" she has put together. It's her first larger quilt.  She's been making "baby size" quilts so this one is a little more of a challenge. Pretty neat don’t you think? She has more work to do on it, but enjoys every minute of working on them. To me it looks like a lot of WORK!  However “work” has many different definitions for different people….. 



Gregg and I found a little project that needed to be done. I wanted to put some wood preservative on the retaining wall in the Motorhome shelter. We used treated wood, but it was sure drying out fast and it's only been up for about a year.



So I sprayed it on and Gregg smoothed it out.  It went on pretty smooth and looked real good. I took a picture of the finished product, but I seem to have lost it somewhere. But main thing is that I hope it works! The girls went to the big city (Rapid City) yesterday and picked up some more paint for the shed, so now we can finish up that project……. probably today.




This is the flag that Gregg and Bonnie fly on the rear of their Escalade Sportster Toyhauler. This is what happens when a Canadian and a US resident get married. I think it is a beautiful flag…..


I couldn’t help but think about this Flag a lot yesterday.  Since 9/11 is always a day to remember and one that none of us will ever forget, it is great to see a flag that designates Peace between two countries. We have so many, many Canadian friends and I wish we could enjoy a relationship with all countries that is as friendly as the one with our great neighbors to the North…….

Wow, That was a Close Call!!

Wednesday evening my computer was acting real strange but it was about bed time so I shut it off and went to bed, hoping it would be all OK when I turned it on the next morning. Well it wasn’t, in fact it went crazy and I couldn’t do anything with it.  I hollered for help from Ms. Pat as she can usually get me straightened out and back to normal.   Not this time, she tried everything and nothing worked. She finally got in touch with McAfee and they had her do a few things to my computer and then told her she had better back the computer up completely and call them back. 

The part that got me was that McAfee told her it would cost $89.95 for them to clear the computer of this Virus.  Whoa, wait a minute! We pay them an annual fee to protect our computers, now we have to pay to have them do what we pay them to do under our annual contract that we have on all three of our computers? Didn’t sound right to me and they wouldn’t proceed without our full credit card info so they could charge our card. Really?? I couldn’t believe it, but what do you do???  They got ya!

It took a couple hours to back up my entire computer, then Ms. Pat called them back. They spent about an hour doing all kinds of tests and poor Ms. Pat doing what they ask her to do and having a tough time understanding the tech……as you know they never speak English.   Then he told her it was not going to be an easy fix and she would have to make an appointment with a super technician and the soonest he could get her in was Saturday……..WHAT??   2 days later??  Yep, that was the best he could do and he would have this SUPER TECH call her between 10-11am.

So we waited and waited, as I wondered if I would ever see my Computer again.  I kept having thoughts of them having to completely sweep the hard drive and I’d lose everything.  Finally, Saturday came and sure enough, shortly after 10am the "Super Man" called and began working on my computer.  He was inside my computer and you could sit there and watch him do stuff....one by one he went through different things with Ms. Pat watching and following his directions as best she could as he was another one that was tough to understand.  FINALLY, about 2 hours later the Tech told her “OK, it’s all yours...it's FIXED”….. 

So, I’m happy to report I have my computer back and it seems to be working fine………Wow, CLOSE CALL!!   I am always very careful what I click on but some of them can get past you. This is the first time this has ever happened and I hope it is the last.  I still don’t know how the virus got in, but from what I hear they are getting better and better at disguising them. One thing I learned is that by paying McAfee an annual fee, they will still charge you to fix your computer if it becomes infected.  They don’t help you and fix it for the regular fee you pay them year after year.  I’m $90.00 shorter but my computer works.  They have become such important items in our life, you are almost willing to pay anything to get them restored. Strange society we live in…….. who would have ever thought…..?


It sure is enjoyable having Gregg and Bonnie here with us.  We have been looking forward to their visit all summer.  Gregg's Harley is in the shop, so we aren’t doing any riding right now, but it should be fixed this week and we’ll enjoy a spin or two in the Hills.  Gregg always tells me to line up some projects for us to do while he is here. Now I know I told you a couple times already that I was "Project'ed out"!! No more projects!! But wait, there is one thing....hmmm maybe a couple things I would sure like to get done and to have a willing helper is WONDERFUL.   


Our little storage shed was starting to need paint.  Gregg said “Lets paint it”!!   Who could pass up an offer like that?  We spent a couple hours prepping it and then the painting began.   We also wanted to get it painted to match the Big Building, so we took some samples to town and the guys at Menard’s said their computer would match it for us.  I was a little skeptical but it seems to be a super good match so far.  Don’t know about the trim as we are saving that until last…..


Ok, here we go! Gee, Gregg is a good painter, he is off and running. I will be glad when this job is DONE, painting is not my favorite thing to do.


Here we are all the way around and about to finish up.  I was laughing as Ms. Pat took this picture telling her that we better not let Rollie see it. He would say, “Get down off that ladder, Pops”!! LOL

After we got all done and looked at the finished product, it sure looked good. But we also noticed a few spots where it wasn’t covered completely, so that means a second coat. Hmmm, darn I hoped one coat would do it but a second coat will go a lot faster and it will look even better.  That wood really sucked up the paint. So next time we are in the big city we will get some more paint and go over it again.   I’ll show you the finished project when we get it completed.    Now Gregg asks, “What's the next project”?

It was 34 deg when we got up Saturday morning.  You can sure tell Fall is in the air. Trees are turning color and it's really getting pretty, although still extremely dry.  We are wearing jackets on our morning hikes and not even breaking a sweat.....I love it.  Pat took these pictures with her phone.......

Only 3 more weeks until our departure date. with a ton of fun and excitement left to do here in the Hills before we call it another season. Come on back next time and see what some of those exciting things are. Meanwhile, Gregg says we need another project!

Have You Heard the News?

I know news travels fast but just out this morning in Nick Russell's Blog, he made the announcement that he and Terry are retiring from having their Gypsy Journal Rallies. This is quite a decision as Nick and Terry have been putting on these Rallies for years. Not an easy decision for them I know. Ms. Pat and I attended many, many of their Rallies as vendors.  Nick is the editor of the Gypsy Journal and a well known author of many fiction books along with many books on RV’ing. If you haven’t looked over his website and seen what all he has to offer, you should do it now.  We have been using most of Nick’s books and directories for years.

Personally, I commend Nick and Terry for this decision. Ms. Pat and I know how tough a decision it is, having just retired from PressurePro a few months ago ourselves. However, as with us it was a decision that had to be made and the right decision for sure.  So from Ms. Pat and I, Congratulations Nick and Terry!! Time to enjoy life and enjoy yourselves.


We had a nice Labor Day weekend motorcycle ride out in the Hills with our good friends Bob and Cindy. Three Trikes...that was quite a sight. Bob and Cindy have had a pair of Trikes for years. They live on a farm near Hemingford, Nebraska, which is close to my home town of Alliance. Bob's parents and my parents were friends and we met through our parents who have all passed on to that big campground up in Heaven. I know they are looking down on us and smiling as we continue to enjoy the friendship of this fine couple. Always good to see them when they come up and enjoy our Hills!

We have been staying busy doing our usual early morning hikes out around stockade in Custer State Park and Ms. Pat continues to work with her sewing machine making all types of things.  She has now started on a new quilt. She is holding dance classes two mornings each week at the Custer YMCA.  I've been messing with my favorite toys....Guns. I miss my private shooting spot right behind our place in AZ and, of course, the Wickenburg shooting Range. I just can’t find a decent place to shoot out here. Especially this summer with it being so dry and so many fires around us. It is just to dry to even be out in the National Forest with our 4-wheelers. 

It was a treat meeting and getting to know fellow Foretravel owners George and Pat. They have been staying at the Broken Arrow Campground just a couple miles from us and it was enjoyable talking Foretravels with them and inspecting each others RV’s.  They have a beautiful Motorhome that is the same year as ours.


Finally, an event that I have been looking forward to for weeks finally happened.  I was excited all day knowing that our great friends Greg and Bonnie were arriving.  All day I kept going to Ms. Pat and asking “Did they call yet? Where are they”?  They had a long drive up from Colorado yesterday but not long before sundown they pulled onto our "little Hill in the Hills".  After many hugs and hello’s, we got them all settled in and hooked up.  Now the fun begins.  I have lots of “projects” that I have saved just for Gregg's expert help.  He always tells me to save some projects for him…so I have a couple biggies.   But we’ll also squeeze in a lot of FUN!!   Now get on up here Paul and Nancy, we’re waiting for ya!

Once in a "Blue Moon"!

A "Blue Moon" is the appearance of the fourth full moon in a season that has four full moons, instead of the usual three. It is never really blue. Because a Blue Moon occurs only every two or three years, the term Blue Moon is used colloquially to mean a rare event, as in the phrase "once in a Blue Moon".

On Friday the 31st of Aug, we had a “Blue Moon”!

I took these pictures of it from our front porch and my “Blue Moon” was BLUE!   However, this may not happen again in a “Blue Moon”!


I have had my WildLife camera up every since we arrived here in the Hills and this is about the only Wild life I have gotten in our back yard beside a bunch of deer. I always thought there might be a Mountain Lion around the place, since they are getting so plentiful around this area. Maybe they are just camera shy!


This young Buck visits quite regularly.


He even relaxes with his buddy once in a while.


They bring their girl friends with them.


This is a shot it took early on July 1st at 5am. I don’t know what set it off, but sometimes a bird or the movement of the grass must do it. Kind of a peaceful picture anyhow..


We always get a couple local cats that roam the area. This guy likes to get his picture taken as he is around a lot. I think he likes Ms. Megabyte2!


Oops, maybe I should have told Ms. Pat where the WildLife camera was located. She wandered right into its path one morning while she was taking Ms. Megabyte2 on her walk.


It's hard to believe that it is Sept 2nd already. Only one short month and we will have closed this place up and be on our way south..  First stop will be Lincoln, Nebraska where we will see our Granddaughter, Shala, and the new twins, Cora and Alice. I assure you, you will get to see a picture of me holding my Twin Great Granddaughters… I can hardly wait.  You know how long it's been since I held a baby? Ages, let me tell you ages!!

We are anxiously awaiting the arrival of our good friends Greg and Bonnie. They should be here around mid week.  We're also expecting our good friends, Paul and Nancy, from North Ranch in a couple of weeks.  We are really looking forward to having them all visit us up here in our "little piece of Heaven in the Hills".

Pat's New Fireplace.

Ms. Pat had been looking and talking about a Fireplace she wanted all summer.

She had in mind to put an “electric” Fireplace/Entertainment Center she found on the internet right here under our TV. She had a little trouble getting the one she wanted. Seems they are a “seasonal” item and neither Lowe's nor Costco, nor any other place would even order one for her.   Finally after she negotiated with these people, she informed me Monday that Lowe's finally had one in just like she wanted.  Uh Oh, I knew that meant a trip to Rapid City for sure. In the picture above, you can see the quilted runner that Ms. Pat made (with lots of help from Janna) for the top of this Fireplace laying over the back of the chair.


So Monday evening we came home with this BIG heavy box.  We had help loading it at Lowe's, but getting it unloaded was a different matter.  But I told Ms. Pat that I had just the solution.  I backed the pickup into the garage and placed the Motorcycle loading ramp on the tailgate and slid the box right out.  Worked like a charm but let me tell you, unboxing some of these big heavy items can be something else.  WOW, they pack them tight. Getting it all unpacked and without damaging something took some effort. Above Ms’ Pat is trying to force some of the bigger sections out of the big box! She will kill me for showing this picture of her….


When I saw the picture of this Fireplace on the internet, I never dreamed that it came in a jillion pieces and you had to put it together. Wrong !!



We got it all unpacked, blanket on the floor so we didn’t scratch it up and then it was time to try and understand those involved and complicating directions…AGAIN!!


After a few mistakes, a few minor disagreements and a lot of head scratching, it finally began going together.


Maybe we will get it...........


After a while we decided it was getting so heavy we wouldn’t be able to carry it into the living room. So we finished it right close to where it was going to sit.  Ms Megabyte2 is saying, "Here we go again!"


There.....the top and the doors are on and it's about time for the Fireplace insert…….   * Note, we were watching  Hurricane “Isaac” nearing landfall….. We have kids and many friends in and around that area. We pray for their safety….  As I type this, it made landfall at New Orleans......80 mph winds, power out…and it's NOT MOVING!  WOW!!! not good..


There it is all done, as Ms. Pat and Megabyte2 stand back and admire the finished project…… 


I’ll tell ya, that fire looks so real it's unbelievable……


Now Ms. Pat has a place for the runner she made………………..   How about that, neat huh?  Check out the Hurricane on the TV and the Hurricane Lamp on the mantel.  Very appropriate, huh?  :-)

No more projects for a while!!..Please! I need some rest…….Ya, Haha!

But it is unbelievably cool inside our “Cabin”. This has been a real good test. About the hottest  summer we will ever have and it is always nice and cool inside. No A/C needed!

Gosh, It’s So Quiet!!

I feel so relaxed and comfortable. I am so happy that we finally made our trip to Glacier. If you knew how long I had wanted to make that trip only to have something come up, you would understand. I was just about to the point where I didn’t know if we would ever make it, or if we were even supposed to make it. But we did and enjoyed it BIG TIME!!

But you know its always good to get home.  It is "So Quiet" around here! No projects going on, not even any projects in plans. Wow, that is a good feeling. Time to just relax for a while…time to enjoy all our past work and projects.  It's almost so quiet I can’t think of anything to Blog about….. now that is TOO QUIET! 

Ms. Pat is really excited about this new found hobby of “quilting” She has taken up. Caryl, at North Ranch in Arizona, helped her make a couple nice baby quilts for our Twin Granddaughters.  She enjoyed that so much she bought a Bernina Artista 165 Sewing/Embroidery machine. Let me tell you she has been giving that machine a workout.

She enjoyed watching Janna do some work on her “long arm” machine while we were visiting with them.  Ms. Pat wanted Janna show her a few things, so Janna took her down to her "quilting studio" to show her how to make a "quilt as you go" table runner.  They didn't have time to finish it, but as soon as we got home, Ms Pat couldn't wait to get to that sewing machine and finish it up. Above is the finished product.  Now I think it looks pretty darn nice, don’t you?  It will be a table runner for our new Fireplace when we get it.   Thanks Janna...Ms Pat is so grateful to you for all your help.  Then yesterday, I see that when the day was about over, she had started another small baby blanket and almost had it done.

Plus, she does her Line Dance instructing on Wednesday mornings and, because of popular demand, she added another Friday morning class.   She will now be having two classes a week for the rest of the summer. Busy Gal, plus about 7am we always take our morning hike around Stockade Lake. So there is really not much relaxing for long around here. 


I can always keep busy with an old hobby of mine that rekindled itself within me the last couple years.   I have always had this admiration of hand guns. I just love ‘em! Here is my newest prize possession..  A Ruger "sr1911" 45 cal.  It is Ruger's first venture into the 1911 market and it is going over like gangbusters. It came out over a year ago and all dealers promptly sold out their inventory. It became scarce and hard to find as all dealers quickly reordered and doubled the amount of their order.

Ruger's Automatic hand gun building plant right there in Prescott, AZ became bogged down with orders for this gun. At one time, I heard that they were over a million orders behind.  The gun quickly went up in price since many dealers had sold their stock and couldn’t get any on reorders. I mean the price went up $100.00, then even $200.00.  I have been looking and researching the gun for months, but due to its price increase I couldn’t justify the price.

Well, just a couple weeks ago, I found a brand new one up for bid on Gunbrokers by a dealer that had a couple that he was auctioning off. I waited and watched, waited some more, and finally saw a sleeper and jumped on it at the last minute while no one else was watching.  I sure didn’t steal it, but I won the auction.  I have been admiring it every since.  I can truthfully say after shooting it that I definitely love it.

It was also my first venture into the 45 Cal 1911’s.  I’m impressed!   Ms. Pat wanted to shoot it, so at that indoor range up in Kalispell, MT, I loaded it up for her and showed her how it worked.   I moved the target down to 10 yds. and she took aim.  BAMM!!  I couldn’t believe it, right in the chest cavity. She blasted 9 more rounds right in the same area.  Laid the gun down on the counter after she cleared it and says “Nice Gun!  I like it”! I want one”.  Man, is there anything this Gal can’t shoot?

So that’s about it from up here on the Hill in God’s country. Fall is definitely in the air, 41 deg when I got up this morning and we have been wearing long sleeves on our morning hike. It's still extremely dry, hasn’t rained for ages and some of the trees are beginning to turn.  Seems to early for that but I guess I say that every year.

It was a GREAT WEEK!!!!

Just a quick special thanks to our dear Lord and Heavenly Father for providing our friend Sherry with a match and lung transplant recently and for providing her with the strength to go through such an operation. Last I heard from Charley, she was doing fine and walking the halls of the hospital getting stronger and stronger.   Praise the Lord and God Bless you Sherry and you too Charley. You guys been through a lot and hopefully it's paying off.

Back Home Sweet Home!!

Yesterday was a Sad, but Happy day. Our vacation had come to an end and it was time for Ms. Pat, Megabyte2 and me to head for home. I hate “goodbyes”, always have. It was sad to leave our good friends Mike and Janna. It was 450 miles home to Custer....a long, one-day trip but not enough to make it a 2 day trip. So, at the crack of dawn, as usual, we were ready to head back to the point from which we started. HOME.

I noticed it was 7:00am when we finally finished hooking up the truck and were leaving Mike and Janna’s place. What a beautiful time, of a beautiful day, to leave such a beautiful place, after a beautiful visit with beautiful friends. (Did I get enough "beautifuls" in that sentence?  I don't know any other way to describe it.) The weather for this entire trip has been outstanding. We were gone for just one day short of 2 weeks and never had any bad weather days…

Here we are parked in Mike and Janna’s driveway between their house and garage.

I told Ms. Pat that we would just drive until we got tired, stop for the night somewhere and get home early Wednesday. Our stop at the Flying J in Billings for fuel was our only real stop for the day. We made a couple more stops, just briefly at a wide spot along the road for a nature call and I like to walk around the RV for an inspection check.  It seemed like in no time we were in Gillette, WY. Things were rolling along so easy, I couldn’t believe what an easy trip it was.

When we turned off I-90 at Moorcroft, WY and headed for Newcastle, I felt we were almost home. I have been so impressed with this Foretravel 40’ Motorhome. The 450hp Cummins engine so effortlessly moves it along and it handles so well that I could drive it forever. I did let Ms. Pat take the wheel for a couple hours so she can stay familiar with driving this rig that looks so big but handles like a pickup truck. The powerful engine, along with the Cruise Control and automatic Allison 6 speed transmission with retarder and a tag axle make unbelievable comfort in driving it.

We pulled into our driveway and up onto our "little hill in Heaven" at 3:30pm....just in time for HAPPY HOUR!!   A great happy hour it was!  Finally I had fulfilled a dream of seeing Glacier National Park and more importantly, showing Ms. Pat Coeur d'Alene, ID.  I had been telling her I wanted to show her what I thought was the most beautiful town I had ever seen for over 25 years. We had tried to plan a trip up to that area for 10 years or more. Something always came up that prevented it, but we finally made it.  I seriously began to wonder if we would make it but I finally was able to show it to her. She now says it is the most beautiful city “she” has ever seen.  I can relax now, another mission in life accomplished…  Praise the Lord!

What a way to top off such a wonderful trip, with a few days at Mike and Janna’s. They showed us their area and we told them we were disappointed we hadn't seen a BEAR on the entire trip. Mike drove us up the side of a tall mountain, about 10 miles in hopes of showing us a BEAR. But no BEAR.  It was ironic, too, because Janna said that when they came out of their driveway to show us where they lived the day we arrived and lead us back to their house, they had seen a big black BEAR right on their driveway.   So it looked like Ms. Pat and I were BEARLESS!!   The drive up the mountain wasn't a total waste, though.  We unloaded our chairs and Happy Hour fixin's and enjoyed the beautiful scenery from the top of the mountain.

When we returned from the long trip down the mountain road and arrived back at their house., he said  “Lets go look up in the gulches behind the house again”!  Ms. Pat wanted to see a bear so bad and Mike was determined to show her one.  We scoured the gulches out back and still no bear. We were turning around starting home, when Mike squinted his eyes and said “Hmmm, what's that way over there on the side of that hill?  It's too dark to be deer."  We all turned our eyes in that direction and at first couldn't see anything. So we looked through our camera’s telephoto lens and could see 3 little black dots....hmmm, they were moving dots.

Mike slowly drove that direction and these little dots became a lot clearer. They were definitely BEAR.  Mike  said “We better walk from here so we don’t scare them off."  So we began walking towards the BEAR!  Not one BEAR, but THREE!   A mother BEAR and her two cubs.  We got to a fence 2 or 3 hundred feet back and stopped quietly to watch. They had seen us but weren’t too alarmed. However, they did slowly turn away.   I felt pretty safe as I felt my holster to make sure I had my new .45 Cal pistol and I knew Mike had his .44 but the last thing we wanted to do was shoot these bears. I told them that if that Momma Bear started running towards us they would see how fast a fat guy can run!:-) We stayed our distance and watched them as the cubs playfully followed their mother.   Janna got some great pictures with her camera and I got a few that weren’t quite so good. But we were thrilled to have finally seen a BEAR!!! Praise the Lord again! You can see the pictures of the BEAR in the slide show below. The two best one's are Janna's......I just had my little camera and she had the better telephoto lens.....
